I could see a little of the impact John has had on my career

I phoned John Hinwood the other day to say thank you. I had just been to our branch practice at Victoria Point in Brisbane, Queensland, a purpose built facility for three associate chiropractors and a wonderful new home for them. Just looking around quietly, I could see a little of the impact John has had on my career. So I said thank you.

I began as a chiropractic graduate way back in 1984, and in February of 1985 began an Associateship with John and Judy Hinwood at their Underwood practice in Queensland. I have never been a client of The Centre for Powerful Practices, however I highly recommend them and their team, as the experience I had with them 25 years ago laid a sound platform for the success I have had over the last 25 years.

Bite the bullet. Life’s too short

I graduated at the end of 2007 and had already long-decided that I wanted to work for the craziest person in the world: Myself. I took out a big business loan, on top of all the other money I already owe, bought a brand – not a practice – and began with one client. The difference between brands, practices and goodwill is something you need to discuss with your coach because that’s the point: When you first start you have no clue. So you need someone to guide you; let you know that everything is going to be okay because what you’re currently experiencing has happened before, you’re not the first and there’s a way forward. “Lean not on your own understanding,” as the American Dr. Phil says.

I give my clients the same advice I have learnt for myself through coaching, that growing and achieving is a process, not an event. And yes, it’s going to cost you some money, some energy, and a lot of commitment. Doing that myself, for myselfthrough coaching, has given me the certainty to deliver the same message to my clients and come from a place of sameness, not holier than thou. In other words taking out a loan to pay for what you value and invest in yourself, whether it’s in one’s health as a new client, or in your future understanding as a practitioner.

I consider myself a relatively smart person, but there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. John knew my biggest struggle was money – of course it is when you have none! But when I took out an additional loan to pay the bill, I would think, “This call today is saving me much more in the future with what I now know.” I know now looking back how quickly I have accelerated to a relative level of success only 18 months out of school. And there many, many factors that contribute to this. Coaching is merely one. However it’s an important one, because even though I’m working for the craziest person, that person still needs to be held accountable to a Sensei: “One who has been there before.”

I therefore recommend to those who have been considering coaching: Bite the bullet. Life’s too short. This is your vocation, not a hobby. Get serious. Powerful Practices is a good place to start.

Making Practice Fun

I thought finishing Chiropractic at University means I can simply start adjusting people and be a successful chiropractor! The reality check came very early on when my new boss went on maternity leave and left me with her entire practice! Drs Clinton and Stephanie’s shared practice tips meant that I was able to learn from all the “behind the scenes” experiences before I fall, making practice fun, and not stressful.  Coaching helped me understand my new identity as a chiropractor, not just someone who can physically adjust people, but also influence them mentally in their attitude towards health and wellness through passion and certainty.

The Energy in my Office has Increased

In the first two months, that Dr. Richard Mitton and I have been working together, we focused on issues in both my personal life and in my practice.

Since then there have been major changes in my life’s priorities and goals which have affected both my life and in the management of my clinic. These changes come from, not what he was telling me to do but rather from, him asking pertinent questions regarding my current and changing situation. This has allowed ME to come up with my answers to those questions, develop my solutions and make decisions and for my life and business.
Since then the energy in my office has increased and this can been seen in both my staff and patients.

My Practice has More than Doubled

To be honest, I never expected that I would ever get a coach, I am more of a person who learns from their own mistakes rather that tips from others. Two years ago however I took up an associateship in Jakarta, Indonesia which offered many challenges so I thought it would be prudent to get some outside assistance. I had previously done a locum for Doug Herron and knew him to be a person of very high integrity, as well as a great chiropractor, so he was my natural choice. Over the last two years he has been a tremendous support during which I've overcome many challenges, my practice has more than doubled in size and I've had a tremendous amount of fun. I recommend having a coach to anyone who wants to take serious steps forward with chiropractic.

Improving my Ability to Communicate in Chiropractic

I started with Powerful Practices 20 months ago right after graduation from Macquarie University at the end of 2006 and it has helped me develop and refine my skills necessary to be successful. Improving my ability to communicate chiropractic has been extremely valuable. I love that the coaching is tailored to my needs so that I can continue to grow. How did I found out about Powerful Practices in the first place?

It started when my employer, Dr. Tony Dawson offered me a job to be his Personal Assistant in Jakarta, Indonesia, when I quit my previous job as a PA.

Little did I know at that time that this also meant I had to be the CA for the brand new practice he was starting up in Jakarta.

Then Dr. Tony Dawson told me that I would have Powerful Practices guide and coach me on becoming a CA. So I had weekly long distance phone calls from Powerful Practices to teach me, and from there, amazing things started to happen.

We started from step 1, "Foundations" book from the Powerful Practices online book store. From this book and my weekly phone calls, I learnt how to make appointments, the necessary scripting on how to answer patients questions, practice procedures and to care for each patient as a special person, not as someone with symptoms or a disease.

The best thing that I can say is that Powerful Practices has taught me not only how to become a CA, but also someone who is more positive, to understand that every problem has a solution, and that every question has an answer.

I am now stepping into a bigger box, bigger challenges, moving from a CA to becoming Office Manager in a fast growing Chiropractic clinic in Indonesia.

I am still a long way from being good, and I know I can be better. That's why I need a coach, to be better, and this will be a lifetime education. With lifetime education, you need a lifetime coach.

Upon graduating from Chiropractic College just less than 2 years ago, I, like most graduates, was equipped with sufficient knowledge on the technique and science of chiropractic such that I was able to go out and start adjusting patients effectively. But the one thing that was lacking was a grounded philosophy of chiropractic! That is, I was unsure of why I was a chiropractor and why I was adjusting patients, and how to explain this to patients!

After doing a 4 week stint as a locum chiropractor, where I was adjusting patients quite mechanistically, I was offered a permanent associate position at my current practice. As part of my employment, I was asked to begin my calls with a coach from the Centre for Powerful Practices. Although, at first I was quit hesitant to make such a long term commitment after some gentle reassurance from colleagues, I made the decision to proceed.

My coach was (and still is) Doug Herron! What a blessing! Doug’s firm understanding of chiropractic philosophy and principles was exactly what I needed to help me increase my certainty in chiropractic, and my faith in the body’s inborn ability to heal! Week by week, we worked on simple tasks to help create my own personalised vision of chiropractic, to improve my confidence and self esteem, to empower my message of chiropractic and patient education!

Over the 18 months Doug and I worked on topics such as chiropractic certainty, chiropractic philosophy, new patient procedures, scripting, self promotion, patient management, analogies, benefits of chiropractic care, and goal setting just to name a few. Doug was always the understanding, listening and reassuring coach, and even during the times when I felt “down and out,” he was always able to pick me back up with his reassuring, comforting and motivating words of wisdom!

18 months on, and the results speak for themselves! My first week in practice I had 13 patient visits, last week, I had 96! I can’t wait to break the hundred mark,.. and I know that I will be averaging 120 patient visits by the end of the year. It’s been a long journey, but it’s also been a steady one!

My experiences with Doug and the team at the Centre for Powerful Practices have been invaluable. I would highly recommend such an experience to all new chiropractic graduates! Thankyou Doug, John, Judy and the rest of the team. Thankyou!

When I became a member of Powerful Practices coaching program I had a slightly different goal in mind. I wanted to sell my practice. Over the past seven years I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of businesses helping them to plan their future direction. Without exception, everyone of them has clearly suffered from a lack of ‘documented systems’.

Most business owners are great ‘technicians’! They have studied the technical side of their trade or profession well and been good apprentices. Then one day make the decision to go into business for themself.
